Search terms in URLs on AltaVista

Back to our newsletter archive The Free-Hit Dictionary newsletter archive http://www.Free-Hit.com Issue #8 - June 18, 2002 Hello! Welcome to the latest issue of search engine facts. 1. Facts of the week: Search terms in URLs on AltaVista Some Web site promotion experts recommend that you use your most important search term in the URL of your Web site so that search engines rank your site higher. We examined this statement in our search engine ranking study. For example, when searching for the search term "shoes", we counted the URLs "www.nice-shoes.com" and "www.axandra.com/shoes/index.htm" as URLs that contain the queried search term in the URL. We tested a total of 1721 search terms on AltaVista and analysed 17,210 Web page URLs for this fact. The result on AltaVista was that 81.78% of all #1 results on Altavista did not contain the queried search term in their URL. 18.22% of all #1 results on AltaVista did contain the queried search term in their URL. We found similar results for positions 2-10 on AltaVista. It seems that it might help a bit to include a search term in the URL of a Web page to obtain a better ranking onsearch engines. This factor should also be considered when optimizing your site for search engines. http://www.axandra.com/search-engine-studies/index.htm If you want to know if a search term in the URL helps on Google, Inktomi or other search engines, check out our other studies: http://www.axandra.com/search-engine-studies/index.htm 2.
